During their Christening, your child will be baptised with water. It’s the start of an amazing journey of faith for your child and a special day for all your friends and family.
‘Christening’ is the word we use to talk about becoming a Christian – ‘Baptism’ means ‘to plunge’ and speaks of the visible sign of God’s love as we are soaked in the water of baptism. They are the same thing, with different words to describe different aspects of what is happening.
At a Christening, we give thanks to God for the gift of life and prepare a child for their life ahead. Before the Christening, we will meet for a rehearsal to talk about the service, answer any questions, and to think more about what having your child Christened means for your family. Godparents are welcome to be around for this too!
Because a Christening marks a child joining God’s family, the church, Christenings at St Mary Magdalene happen during our main Sunday service at 10am, so that the whole of God’s family in this place can be present to welcome them.
Baptism marks the beginning of a journey with God which continues for the rest of our lives, the first step in response to God’s love. -From the Baptism service A mother holds a young girl, who looks down into the font as the priest blesses the water
It’s not just babies who are Christened – we are always pleased to hear from older children and adults who would like to be Baptised.
To find out more, come along to a service on Sunday, where there are always activities especially for children. If you would like to enquire about a Christening at St Mary Magdalene please fill in our enquiry form and someone will be in touch with you very soon.
